These locomotives were not successful and a new 2-8-2 tank locomotive was ordered from Kitson & Co. It arrived in 1908 and was found to be more than adequate to the New South Wales Government Railways T Class. Meanwhile the East Greta Coal Mining Company (later formed South Maitland Railways) continued using second-hand 4, 6 and 8 coupled wheel locomotives for coal haulage. Up until then the only new locomotives had been bought from the Avonside Engine Co. but they broke that tradition when larger locomotives were needed and went to Beyer, Peacock & Co. A tank locomotive with an enclosed cab and better vision when running backwards was favoured over a tender design.
